What is safety switch and why is important?
What is safety switch and why is important?
On average, one to two Australian children tragically die each year as a result of non-compliant blind cords. To try to prevent these needless deaths, mandatory safety standards attach to any window covering fitted since 2010 have been in force since 2015.
A safety switch, also called a Residual Current Device (RCD), is a crucial device designed to prevent electrocution.
Unlike circuit breakers, which detect large current overloads to protect appliances, safety switches are more sensitive and respond to smaller current imbalances that circuit breakers miss.
Only a safety switch provides effective protection against potentially fatal electric shocks.
Strict restrictions regarding the height of hanging cords, the need for cord guides in certain circumstances and labelling requirements are all designed to keep occupants safe.

NSW & QLD Safety Switch Requirements
Authorities in both NSW and QLD recommend testing safety switches every six months to ensure they function properly.
New South Wales
Required on new power circuits since 1991 and new light circuits since 2000.
Not mandatory for older circuits, but strongly recommended by NSW Fair Trading.
At the start of a tenancy, landlords and tenants must confirm the safety switch is working via the entry condition report (testing is required).
Faulty safety switches or detected electrical faults are considered urgent repairs.
Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician, who must issue a uniquely numbered Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work (CCEW).
Queensland
Safety switches are mandatory in rental properties, with fines up to $1,500 for non-compliance.
Properties built before 1992 often lack safety switches; owners must install them within three months of purchase.
The Residential Tenancies Authority advises upgrading old switchboards for better safety.
Only licensed electricians can install safety switches; DIY electrical work is illegal.
